On April 30, 2024, the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Bangladesh organized a consultation workshop with BKMEA titled “Climate Change, Just Transition and Environmental Sustainability in the Bangladesh RMG Industry” in Dhaka. 10 representatives (8 male, 2 female) from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) participated in this consultation.
The workshop aimed at revisiting the importance of climate change, just transition, and environmental sustainability in Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) industry from national & global perspective. Key findings from the ETI-BRAC University perception survey on Just Transition and Environmental Sustainability were presented.
ETI Bangladesh highlighted its initiatives in just transition, climate change, energy, and environmental sustainability. Participants engaged in discussions on BKMEA's existing policies, programmes, and initiatives related to these areas. The event explored avenues for collaboration between ETI and BKMEA to address the needs and challenges in promoting an inclusive and just green transition, climate action to ensure environmental sustainability within the RMG sector.
Participants emphasized on the need for awareness, capacity building, research, and policy support to drive green practices and renewable energy adaptation in factories. The importance of financial incentives, tax rebates, and media campaigns to encourage the transition towards eco-friendly industry.
