ETI Bangladesh delivered a series of information-sharing events on responsible purchasing practices in Dhaka from July 15 to July 18, 2024. The sessions aimed to enhance understanding among stakeholders in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry regarding responsible purchasing practices and collect takeholders’ experiential insights. ETI UK’s Purchasing Practices Programme Lead Melissa Karadana led the sessions.
The series, comprised of four events, began with an event with factory representatives, which saw 34 participants from 25 RMG factories in attendance. This was followed by an event with brand representatives, drawing 23 participants from 16 brands. The third event with labour leaders and labour rights activists brought together 22 labor leaders and activists. The series concluded with an event with Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), attended by 17 officials.
Key topics included present purchasing practices and its impact on the parties involved, Common Framework for Responsible Purchasing Practices (CFRPP), the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), stakeholders’ experience, insights and recommendations regarding purchasing practices.
Participants engaged in discussions about the need for responsible purchasing practices, emphasizing mutual respect and collaboration among stakeholders. Challenges like compliance expenses, pricing competition, and the necessity for standardized procedures were emphasized. Closing remarks from ETI Bangladesh’s Country Manager, Abil Bin Amin, underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders to address these challenges and to improve industry standards.
ETI Bangladesh intends to continue dialogues on responsible purchasing practices including organizing a comprehensive multi-stakeholder dialogue later this year. ETI Bangladesh remains committed to promoting responsible purchasing practices and fostering a more ethical and sustainable RMG industry in Bangladesh.
