Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Bangladesh and Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) jointly organised a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on Chemical and Waste Management in Tannery Operations. Held from 4–5 May 2025, as part of the project “Improving Environmental and Social Conditions in the Savar Tannery Estate, Bangladesh”.
The training aimed to enhance the technical knowledge and facilitation skills of ETI and BLF project teams, enabling them to support tanneries in adopting environmentally sound and socially responsible practices. With a focus on meeting national and international compliance standards such as Leather Working Group (LWG) certification, the ToT aimed to build practical capacity among field facilitators to guide factory management and workers’ representatives toward improved compliance.
The sessions were led by a resource person with extensive practical experience in the tannery sector. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance field-level capacity to support factory workers, managers, and other stakeholders in strengthening chemical and waste management in their facilities.
Following the ToT, the trained facilitators will now conduct sessions with tannery managers, supervisors, and workers’ representatives in the Savar Tannery Estate. These upcoming trainings will focus on practical improvements, helping stakeholders better understand compliance requirements and take concrete steps toward a more sustainable operation and meet global standards in terms of chemical and waste management.
