On 4 September 2024, ETI Bangladesh Brand Members Forum meeting took place at Dhaka to addressed the issues affecting RMG sector during recent political unrest and floods. This meeting, attended by 13 (4 female, 9 Male) ETI member brand’s representatives from 12 brands, focused on their experience, challenges and measures during these crises.
ETI Bangladesh’s Country Manager, Abil Bin Amin, highlighted key risk areas and recommendations from the Joint statement for responsible business conduct in Bangladesh. Eight organizations jointly issued the statement. These organizations are amfori, Cascale, Ethical Trade Denmark, Ethical Trade Norway, Ethical Trading Initiative, ETI Sweden, Fair Labor Association, Fair Wear Foundation and Mondial FNV. This statement urged companies operating in and sourcing from Bangladesh to conduct business responsibly.
During open discussions, it was noted that external groups, rather than workers, were responsible for much of the recent unrest. Despite timely payments, factories faced challenges such as liquidity issues, leading to potential unrest. Flash floods further disrupted operations. The forum emphasized the need for stronger action to restore law and order situation. They also emphasized the need for responsible media coverage. There were calls for better engagement with local trade unions and administrators to improve conditions for workers.
ETI Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for responsible purchasing practice and maintaining a dialogue with all stakeholders. The forum concluded with a call for continued focus on worker well-being and sustainable solutions to protect the RMG sector during crisis times.
